Mayapples and Shamrock against Oak -- Vertical View
Mayapples are some of the most interesting of spring plants in
the southeast. They pop up like mystical little creatures in the
spring and last just a short time. If you peek under the umbrella-like
foilage early on in the spring, you'll see a delicate white flower
with a creamy yellow center; later on, you'll see a fruit
that looks like a little apple. Be careful -- many parts of this
plant are poisonous, including the fruit while it is green.
Mayapples were used by Native Americans to treat many disorders,
and to this day parts of the plant are used to treat cancers.
I saw these growing at the base of the oak and just had to capture
the contrast in texture of the wildflowers and foilage against
the bark of the oak.
